Memories didn’t flood back, not like I wanted.

But there was absolutely something, something deep and passionate erupted through my body, from my brain to my heart until it throbbed in every fiber of my bones. Guilt rolled through my stomach. How could I forget Wendy? She was…she was…

Damn, she was important, but I couldn’t remember why!

I knew her! I knew her but nothing solid came to mind about how.

“I don’t remember her,” My fists ground so tight blood seeped from where my nails cut the skin. “I know her, but I don’t remember her.”

Sparrow’s eyes widened, a fraction if not less, “You truly do not remember her? Not at all?” Her voice rose an octave, desperation dripping off each syllable. “All that time here, gone?”

“No!” Shouting may not have been the best response, but she was asking the same question, expecting a different response. “No, I can’t remember anything! You asking me over and over doesn’t change that!”

She recoiled but didn’t move from the bedside.

Wendy, likewise, didn’t stir.

Huffing, I caught my breath in my chest, forced a swallow to hold down my words. “Why don’t you ask her?”

It was meant to be a one off slur, a tease but as soon as it left my lips, I clung to the idea. If I couldn’t remember anything except I knew she and Peter weren’t here to confront (and believe me, I was going to confront) then the next best thing was to ask her, wasn’t it?

“She can’t answer, even if she wanted to.” Sparrow held a hand out to me but didn’t make any movement to approach.

Reluctantly, I reached out and took her hand. She pulled, ever so gently, until my feet cluttered against the base of the wooden bed. Ignoring the light ache it generated, I stared down at Wendy again. After a moment, I sank to my knees and watched.

“Do you see why?” Sparrow’s voice was taut, pulled tighter than the last nerve of a mother at midnight. “Why not ask her yourself if you are so certain?”

Her voice vexed me, gnawing on my ears. What did she want from me? Did she think I wanted to have no memory? Did she think I was purposely leading her on, waiting to spring some perfect ‘gotcha’ to plummet her spirits?

I could be mean, sure, even insensitive but I wasn’t a heartless pirate.

Gazing at Wendy, I waited. She still had yet to say a word and something deep inside told me that wasn’t like her. A piece of me shouted about the appearance of looking like a total creep—sitting there, my eyes level with hers, watching her sleep but standing above her hadn’t been right either. Whatever the reason, she was supposed to look down at me.

Aside from the silence, the stillness of her unnerved me. My skin rolled and a chill from inside bubbled up in my chest. Cold swept over me and cold was not something associated with this elf. Her entire being was supposed to illuminate, like the sun.
